Vintage Ads!

Oh, how I love the 50's and 60's. What an amazing time for art, design, and advertising.

This poster was created for the a lecture with actress Virginia Madsen of SIDEWAYS. She'll be talking about women's roles in Hollywood and how we have been reduced to binary roles of good girl vs. bad girl. Playing off the unapologetically sexist images of 50's ads, I came up with this torn image of women stuck in exactly those roles.

As far as color palette, this poster works extremely well. The top ad is actually for fabric swatches, and adds nice layers to the image. I think the fonts are a little obvious, but I'm pretty excited overall.

Here's an illustration I created of Madsen. I wanted the image to be graphic novel style, but the concept never really matured. And she looks like Medusa. A goth Medusa.
